What Makes Spray Foam Different
Spray foam insulation sprays on as a liquid and expands to fill the cavity, sealing air leaks and insulating at once. Batts and loose fill slow heat but let air pass. In Northwest Arkansas, where humid summer air pushes into attics, walls and crawl spaces, that seal matters as much as the R-value.
Closed-cell foam
Closed-cell foam is dense and rigid, about R-5 to R-7 per inch according to HomeGuide, and at enough thickness it slows water vapor. It is our usual choice for crawl space walls, rim joists, metal buildings and barndominium walls. HomeGuide lists it at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed.
Open-cell foam
Open-cell foam is soft and expands a great deal, about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch. It fills rafters and stud bays well and costs about $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot. It is common on roof decks over attics with ductwork and in above-grade walls. The Department of Energy advises against open-cell foam below ground.
Where foam fits in NWA homes
- Attics with ducts and air handlers. Foam on the roof deck keeps equipment in cooler air.
- Bonus rooms and kneewalls. Foam fills slopes and kneewalls that batts never fit well.
- Crawl space walls and rim joists. Closed-cell foam, paired with a sealed ground cover.
- Metal shops and barndominiums. Closed-cell foam on steel stops condensation.
- New construction and additions. Open or closed cell in open stud bays.
What we check before spraying
We look for roof leaks, plumbing leaks, mold and wet framing first, because foam can hide them. We also talk about ventilation: a much tighter house may need bath fans vented outdoors and a check of any gas appliances. If you plan to sell, we explain how foam on the roofline can affect a future home inspection. Get a free estimate

Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Is spray foam worth it in Arkansas?
Where air leakage and hot attics are the problem, often yes. On a simple attic floor, sealing plus blown-in usually gives similar comfort for less money. We quote what fits your house.
Can spray foam go over existing insulation?
Not usually. Foam has to bond to wood, steel or concrete. Old batts in the way come out first.
Does foam cause moisture problems?
Not when it is installed correctly over dry surfaces with ventilation planned. Problems come from foam covering leaks or wet wood, which is why we check first.
How long does spray foam last?
Installed correctly and kept dry, it stays in place for the life of the framing it is attached to.
