The Simple, Affordable Attic Upgrade
Blown-in attic insulation is often the best value for a vented attic with an open floor. Loose cellulose or fiberglass is blown through a hose and settles around joists, wires and pipes. HomeGuide lists blown-in at about $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot, and $900 to $3,600 for a typical attic.
Seal first
Blown-in insulation slows heat but does not stop air. Before we add any, we seal the gaps in the attic floor: around lights, plumbing vents, wiring, chases and the hatch. Then the new insulation is not just filtering leaky air.
How much to add
For a Zone 4 attic, the Department of Energy suggests R-60 if it is empty, or about R-49 added over 3 to 4 inches. HomeGuide lists cellulose at R-3.1 to R-3.8 per inch and loose fiberglass at R-2.2 to R-2.9, so reaching those levels takes well over a foot of material. We install to the manufacturer's settled depth for the R-value on your quote and set depth markers.
Cellulose or fiberglass
Cellulose packs denser and resists air movement better. Fiberglass is lighter and does not absorb water. Both work well in a vented attic, and we will recommend one based on your attic and budget.
Keep the vents open
We install baffles at the eaves so soffit vents stay clear, and make sure bath fans vent outdoors, not into the attic. Get a free estimate

Blown-In Attic Insulation Questions
How long does blown-in take?
Most attics are sealed and insulated in a day.
Can blown-in go over old insulation?
Yes, if the old insulation is dry and clean. We seal around it first.
Does blown-in settle?
A little. We install to the settled depth listed for your target R-value.
Is blown-in cheaper than foam?
Per square foot, usually by a wide margin, which is why it is the standard choice for vented attic floors.
